Three Observations About Quality School District Websites
This morning I spent a few hours trying on the web sites of comparatively massive college districts. These are my ideas and observations after viewing them from the attitude of a mother or father.
Make It Obvious!
The good websites make it apparent for folks to seek out current and related data.
Don’t make mother and father dig by quite a lot of vaguely named menus to seek out the data they want about your college. I checked out one district’s web site this morning to attempt to discover the varsity calendar for subsequent fall. There was not a single tab or menu anyplace on the homepage labeled “calendar” or “schedule.” The college calendar was solely discovered if you happen to clicked on a tab labeled “menu” then scrolled all the way down to the fourth sub-menu that was labeled “calendars.” Information concerning the college board members, human sources data for employees, and an outdated 2015-2020 strategic plan have been all listed larger than the varsity 12 months calendar.
Social Media Isn’t a Replacement for a Good Website
Posting on social media is just not a substitute for having a well-designed and often up to date college/ college district web site.
Some of the higher websites I checked out included embedded streams of district/ college social media postings. They do this as a result of they acknowledge that not each mother or father or pupil makes use of social media. Additionally, once you depend on social media you are hoping that folks and college students will comply with your accounts. And even when they do comply with your accounts you then must hope that your postings will stand-out from the entire different updates that folks and college students see from the opposite accounts they comply with.
Who is working the web site?
The higher web sites that I checked out this morning have been from college districts which have somebody on workers whose job title included communications director or public relations. The dangerous ones appeared to be run as nearly an afterthought or decrease precedence activity of the IT division.
